Orson Welles’ Dr. Faustus

Welles’ Dr. Faustus used light as a prime unifying scenic element in a nearly black stage.
Faustus was presented January 8 – May 9, 1937, at Maxine Elliott’s Theatre, New York.
Paul Bowles, author of The Sheltering Sky, composed the music.

“There is a way to master silence
Control its curves, inhabit its dark corners
And listen to the hiss of time outside” — Paul Bowles
